Who are Healthy Start?

Healthy Start is one of the main benefits that has been available to people with children. It means you get weekly free vouchers to spend on certain foods to spend with local retailers, as well as free vitamins available at a range of places. There are some prerequisites in order to qualify for the scheme as it is means-tested; including pregnancy and the age of the children.

The vouchers can be spent on basics such as plain fresh or frozen fruit, infant formula milk and plain cow’s milk. You also receive vitamin coupons to swap for Healthy Start vitamins, designed for pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children. The supplements are normally available at health centres and NHS clinics – your midwife or health visitor can help you locate the nearest place.

Administered by the NHS, both vitamins and food vouchers are available to pregnant women who have a child under four years old. If the child is under one you can get two vouchers a week. If you are on another type of benefit and are under 18 and pregnant you will also qualify for Healthy Start vouchers.
